The programme01

Better schools, designed by professionals and grown on site.

The Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) initiated the Grow A Classroom project to address the deplorable conditions in public schools across Kenya. Many institutions face challenges such as dilapidated infrastructure, insufficient ventilation, and encroachment. By integrating professional design with environmental stewardship, AAK aims to transform learning environments for over 55,000 schools nationwide.

We are actively seeking partners to roll out this initiative across all 47 counties in Kenya.

How it works02

A classroom that grows its own materials.

  1. 01

    Master plans

Development of comprehensive master plans for schools to ensure logical layout and future expansion.

  2. 02

    Landscaping

Appropriate landscaping to enhance outdoor learning experiences using wood, ornamental, and fruit trees.

  3. 03

    Timber from the site

Creation of a sustainable material source by using mature wood from onsite trees for classrooms and furniture.

  4. 04

    Tree planting

Fostering a culture of tree planting to increase national tree cover and sequester carbon.

  5. 05

    Carbon credits

Monetization of carbon credits to create a sustainable revenue stream for educational institutions.
