The Architectural Association of Kenya is pleased to announce the AAK Annual Convention 2021, AAK’s premier Annual Continuous Professional Development Event. This year’s theme is ‘The Built Environment and Climate Action: An Impactful Way forward’. It will entail discussions on urban responses to climate change, what the implications are on the built environment, and how the industry can engage tools and techniques to ensure a sustainable environment for the future. This comes against the backdrop of the UNEP 2020 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction which states that the sector is responsible for 35% of global energy use and 38% global GHG emissions.
We will focus our discussion on the following sub-themes:
- What would be the implications on the design approach for future buildings?
- Which applicable regulations or policies ensure that future buildings are climate-responsive?
- What are the defining criteria for sustainable building material in the context of Kenya?
- What innovative options are available locally as green alternatives?
- What are non-sustainable building materials?
- What are the existing tools for the evaluation of Green Design in Kenya and what criteria are applied therein?
- Which case study buildings have a green rating in Kenya and how can similar principles be applied to existing and future developments?
- What are the economic costs and benefits, including incentives, of sustainable buildings and cities?
- What are the opportunities available for funding and incubation of innovations towards climate resilience?
